Highways and Roads

TYPAR Geosynthetics are extensively used in civil engineering in the construction of highways - from preventing intermixing of sub-base and subgrade layers, control erosion on slopes, for roadside drainage, as part of Low Impact Design (LID) projects for infrastructure access and in the construction of retaining walls, bridge abutments and steep slopes.

Erosion control on highway slopes

TYPAR Geocells are a three-dimensional system of connected cells placed on slopes and secured using pins. The resulting structure is filled with topsoil.

Controlling erosion on highway slopes

TYPAR Geocells are supplied flat packed and ready to be opened and spread into the distinctive honeycomb array. Upon installation, TYPAR Geocells provide stability by confining fill and improving resistance to wind and run-off.

Stability is further enhanced when vegetation is established in a topsoil fill. TYPAR Geocells can be used to establish vegetation on slopes where establishign cover is difficult. The honeycomb structure provides protection for young plants.

Our cells are formed from a geotextile which confines the fill and allows drainage from cell to cell due to the permeable nature of the fabric. Compared to competitor geocells where the cell-to-cell drainage is established by perforating the walls of the cells, leading to potential weakness in the structure.

Due consideration must be given to all site design criteria on a project by project basis, as the slope angle, stability, infill type, rainfall levels and irrigation can affect the performace of the slope-protection properties.

Typical applications include:

• embankments
• road abutments
• shoreline & streambank restoration
• Soup to 1:1 slopes
• drainage channels
• stormwater ponds
