Highways and Roads

TYPAR Geosynthetics are extensively used in civil engineering in the construction of highways - from preventing intermixing of sub-base and subgrade layers, control erosion on slopes, for roadside drainage, as part of Low Impact Design (LID) projects for infrastructure access and in the construction of retaining walls, bridge abutments and steep slopes.

Application Function

Stabilization

TYPAR Geocells provide a cost-effective alternative to conventional building and earth retention solutions and are suitable for a wide range of foundation and fill materials, making for a cost-effective solution versus traditional methods.

TYPAR Geocells can be installed nearly vertical, forming an economical earth retention structure or used horizontally to form a wall. Our geocells are effectively used as a facing system in a composite wall in conjunction with an earth reinforcement system to form a mechanically stabilized earth structure or just the panels to form a gravity structure. TYPAR Geocells can be used in conjunction with geogrid or geotextile earth reinforcement, soil nails, rock bolts, etc.

Typical installations use a composite wall type of construction to create a confined wall facing directly connected to the backfill using an earth reinforcement system. For restricted sites that do not allow this method of construction, a gravity wall may be considered as an alternative.

When constructing a gravity wall, the TYPAR Geocell is built as a layered wall that can resist internal loads to retain structural integrity. Using our Geocell in this application creates horizontal terracing that may be used to create a vegetated cover for the facing.

Similar to slope protection, individual cells allow precipitation to infiltrate the exposed surface, creating a suitable environment for vegetation and allowing cells to maximize water collection and minimize run-off.

The unique nature of TYPAR Geocells offers flexibility and allows for infilling with a wide range of infill soils, sand, aggregate, concrete and top soils.

Design Considerations

• Facia Angle
• Wall Height
• Overturning Stability (the consideration of the turning moment around the toe of the structure)
• Sliding Stability (shear strength at the base of the gravity wall).
• Foundation Bearing Capacity (the substrate must be able to support the applied load of the wall structure).
• Surcharge load on the top of the wall

Typical Applications Include:

• Embankments
• Dams and Flood Defense
• Retention Bunds
• Green Walls
• Culvert Head Walls
• Sound Barriers
